Alcohol addiction is no joke, and for many people, going to rehab is a life-saving and transformative process.

Once you’ve decided that you need treatment, finding the right alcohol rehab for you is the next step. Every treatment program is different much like every patient is different. That’s why you need to be aware of your treatment options and your personal needs.

Different Types of Alcohol Rehab Programs in New Jersey

Since the mid-1970s, research has shown that substance abuse treatment is effective in helping people change their behaviors, adjust their attitudes, avoid relapse, and ultimately recover.[1] However, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to treating alcohol use disorder.

Although there are many different approaches to treating alcoholism, the two primary types of alcohol rehab in New Jersey include inpatient and outpatient programs.

Inpatient Treatment

Inpatient addiction treatment is the most intensive type of rehab there is. These programs require patients to live at the facility during the duration of their treatment. Patients may be enrolled anywhere from 30 to 90 days on average and undergo a variety of different therapies that help people start on their journey to recovery.

This type of treatment is best for people who:

  • Have a severe alcohol use disorder or alcohol addiction
  • Require alcohol detox services
  • Don’t have a supportive home environment that encourages sobriety
  • Have attended outpatient treatment in the past but have relapsed
  • Suffer from co-occurring mental or physical health conditions

The structure and around-the-clock supervision provide incentives to help people stay sober. For example, if you’re at an inpatient alcohol rehab in New Jersey and you’re suddenly tempted to drink, you’re surrounded by peers, counselors, behavioral technicians, and medical staff at all times. Any of these people can provide support. Furthermore, the strict structure of inpatient programs helps keep patients busy with therapy, counseling, recreational activities, and more. This helps patients learn how to live sober and cultivate a healthy routine.

Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient addiction treatment can serve two purposes:

  1. As a primary treatment option for people who can’t go to or don’t require residential care
  2. As a form of aftercare for patients who complete a residential alcohol rehab program

Outpatient is broken down into two categories: intensive outpatient programming (IOP) and outpatient programming (OP). IOP is far more structured and intensive than OP, as it requires patients to spend most of their days at the treatment facility. OP, on the other hand, typically only consists of 2-3 group therapy sessions a week. In most cases, people who participate in outpatient alcohol rehab also live in a sober home, attend individual counseling, and stay involved in recovery support groups.

There are many reasons why people choose outpatient rehab over residential rehab. For instance, some people have children they care for or jobs they can’t leave. On the other hand, some people are only mildly addicted and don’t require alcohol detox services or mental health treatment. These individuals can benefit from IOP or OP.

Furthermore, many people who complete residential alcohol rehab programs in New Jersey choose to participate in outpatient care to help ease the transition out of treatment. Under these circumstances, outpatient treatment helps prevent relapse, reinforce healthy coping mechanisms, and provide ongoing support to people in early recovery.

Addiction Treatment Approaches and Specialities

Whether you attend inpatient or outpatient rehab, every treatment center is slightly different. Some facilities have certain specialties and treatment approaches while others vary significantly. Once you identify what your specific needs and beliefs are, you can start narrowing down your treatment options to find the right alcohol treatment provider for you. Three primary addiction treatment approaches include dual diagnosis, 12-step based, and evidence-based.

Dual Diagnosis Alcohol Rehab

Dual diagnosis refers to the co-existence of an alcohol use disorder and mental illness. Since between 40 and 60% of people who abuse drugs or alcohol suffer from a mental health condition, many alcohol rehabs in New Jersey specialize in dual diagnosis patients.[2]

Some symptoms of mental illness are similar to those of alcoholism, making diagnoses of co-occurring disorders particularly difficult. However, for this same reason, the same therapies used to treat alcohol abuse are used to treat the vast majority of mental illnesses. Dual diagnosis programs use integrated treatment methods involving behavioral therapy, medication management, aftercare, individual counseling, and holistic healing.

12-Step Approach

Some facilities offer a spiritual retreat or 12-Step approach. The 12 steps come from the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and involve taking a more holistic or spiritual approach to treating alcohol abuse. Since members of these groups remain anonymous, it’s hard to get an accurate representation of how efficient these support groups are. Still, millions of people worldwide participate in these programs and benefit from the support and accountability that they get.

Evidence-Based Alcohol Abuse Treatment

Licensed and accredited alcohol rehab providers use evidence-based treatments that take into consideration three elements:

  • The experience of the primary therapist
  • The beliefs and experiences of the patients
  • Clinically-tested and proven rehabilitation methods

Evidence-based treatment for alcohol abuse combines pharmacotherapy with behavioral therapies to help people identify unhealthy behaviors and implement healthy coping mechanisms that support recovery. These approaches include the following therapeutic techniques:[3]

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy
  • Medication-assisted treatment
  • Family behavior therapy
  • Contingency management
  • Motivational enhancement therapy
  • 12-step facilitation therapy

This type of individualized alcohol treatment is highly regarded in the behavioral health community as it addresses the unique underlying causes and conditions of a person’s problematic drinking.
