Drug Rehab Options in New Jersey

Get started on your road to recovery. Reach out today

Looking into your addiction treatment options is the first step towards recovery. Fortunately, there are a lot of drug rehab options available across the state of New Jersey. When people suffer from drug or alcohol addiction, many of them need therapy and counseling in order to stay sober. Although most treatment facilities require you to detox before starting treatment, it’s also important to be aware of the different kinds of addiction help out there.

Generally, drug rehab options in New Jersey consist of inpatient and outpatient rehab. The level of care a person requires is heavily dependent on the severity of his or her substance abuse. However, regardless of which level of care you attend, different facilities have different clinical specialties, therapy approaches, and amenities. There is no one-size-fits-all treatment for substance use disorder. What’s most important is that you become aware of what treatments are out there and are able to determine which one is best for you.

Inpatient Addiction Treatment

Inpatient treatment is also known as residential treatment because patients temporarily live at the rehab facility. This is the most intensive level of care that provides a secure and safe environment for recovery. Residential programs usually offer drug and alcohol detox services as well as a structured day-to-day therapy regimen. These structured environments help remove patients from situations that trigger or enable substance abuse so they can begin their journey. While any treatment is better than none at all, residential rehab programs tend to have better success rates due to the quality and intensity of care. The Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment explains that “longer duration of treatment and provision of structured continuing care is associated with better treatment outcomes.”[1]

Inpatient rehab is best for people with severe substance use disorders who require around-the-clock medical and clinical support. Furthermore, people with co-occurring mental health conditions or behavioral disorders are best suited for residential programs. While many inpatient rehab options in New Jersey last 30 days, some last for several months depending on the patient’s individual needs.

Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP)

Partial hospitalization programs (PHP) or partial care programs serve as a bridge between inpatient and outpatient rehab. While the therapies provided in PHP programs are similar to those of residential programs, this rehab option is best for people who have a supportive home environment, reliable transportation to and from the treatment center, and don’t need medical care.

PHP programs vary depending on which facility you choose, but most programs require patients to come to the facility for 4-5 days a week for several hours. During the day, patients receive behavioral therapy, medication management, relapse prevention education, and more. Furthermore, most partial care programs encourage patients to attend 12-step meetings or other kinds of recovery support groups to assist in their recovery.

Outpatient Programming (OP)

Outpatient programming is a popular form of drug rehab in New Jersey due to the flexibility of this treatment option. Outpatient usually serves as a transitional period between residential rehab and aftercare because this transition isn’t always easy. However, some people don’t have the luxury of attending inpatient rehab for work, family, financial, or academic reasons. In these cases, outpatient rehab is the best option.

Although OP only requires patients to attend treatment sessions a few times a week, the therapies provided are just as effective in treating addiction as the ones offered in residential programs. While effective, it’s equally important that people in these programs have a supportive home environment, receive medication management, and are participating in a recovery support group.

Clinical Approaches and Treatment Therapies

Everyone is different and can benefit from a unique treatment approach. That’s why different rehab centers have varying clinical approaches and specialties. For example, some treatment centers focus on mental health and dual diagnosis patients while others focus solely on substance addictions. On the other hand, some treatment centers use evidence-based programs based on clinical research and knowledge, while others take a holistic or spiritual approach utilizing 12-step facilitation. Needless to say, you should choose the drug rehab center that best aligns with your beliefs and needs. If you’re not a religious person, you probably shouldn’t attend a 12-step rehab. Similarly, if you suffer from bipolar disorder or depression, you should choose a facility that offers mental health treatment.

Furthermore, there is a wide variety of therapies available for addiction treatment. Each therapy used serves a unique purpose, but the therapies used on each patient should be determined based on the clinical diagnosis of his or her primary clinician. Some treatment therapies that you can expect from drug rehabs in New Jersey include:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical-behavioral therapy (DBT)
  • Family therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Individual counseling
  • Medication-assisted treatment (MAT)
  • Experiential therapy
  • Holistic therapy
  • Motivational enhancement therapy
  • Psychodynamic therapy
  • Life skills education
  • Relapse prevention
  • Mental health counseling

Most comprehensive rehabs will utilize many, if not all, of these therapies in order to maximize the efficiency of treatment and provide a “whole-patient” approach that addresses all manifestations of addiction.
